The sangeet has become one of the most loved parts of the wedding, and a good choreographer can turn nervous relatives into confident performers. Here is how to pick one.
Look for wedding experience
Dancing well on stage is different from teaching a group of aunts, uncles and cousins with different abilities. Ask how many sangeets they choreographed last season and watch videos of real family performances, not only their own dance reels.
Check how they teach
- Do they simplify steps for elders and children?
- Do they break routines into small parts and share practice videos?
- Are they patient and encouraging? Families should enjoy the practice, not dread it.
Plan the performances together
A typical sangeet has a few acts: the bride's side, the groom's side, friends, parents and the couple. A choreographer can help choose songs, decide the order and keep each act short so guests stay interested.
Agree on rehearsals
- How many sessions will each group get, and how long is each?
- Where will rehearsals happen: at home, a studio or the venue?
- Will they attend a final run-through at the venue to plan entries and exits?
- Will they be present on the sangeet night to cue the music and guide the performers?
Understand the pricing
Choreographers may charge per song, per group or a package for the whole sangeet. Confirm travel charges and what happens if extra rehearsals are needed.
Start early
Begin four to eight weeks before the wedding, depending on the number of performances and how often people can meet.
