Planning rehearsals well is the difference between a relaxed, confident sangeet and a last-minute rush. Here is how to plan time and budget.

How choreographers charge

  • Per song: a fixed fee for each routine, common for a few performances.
  • Per group or person: useful when many relatives join in.
  • Package: a fixed price for the whole sangeet, including planning the running order and attending the event.
  • Extras: travel, studio rent, extra rehearsals and presence on the night may be charged separately.

Ask for a written quote that lists the songs, groups, number of sessions and what happens on the event day.

How many rehearsals you need

As a rough guide:

  • A simple group dance for beginners: four to six sessions.
  • A couple dance: five to eight sessions, depending on the routine.
  • Children: short, frequent sessions work better than long ones.
  • A final combined rehearsal at or near the venue: at least one.

People who practise at home with videos need fewer sessions.

Plan around busy schedules

  • Make a shared calendar for rehearsals.
  • Hold weekend sessions for out-of-town relatives and online sessions for those far away.
  • Teach the main chorus to everyone first, so groups can still perform if some people miss a session.

Save without losing quality

  • Combine smaller groups into one bigger act.
  • Use one medley instead of many separate songs.
  • Rehearse at home instead of renting a studio.

The event day

Ask whether the choreographer will help backstage, line up groups and cue the music. That support keeps the show smooth.
