Bridal mehendi is part art and part tradition, and it stays on your hands in every wedding photo. Choosing the right artist is worth a little research.
Know the style you want
Mehendi styles vary a lot:
- Traditional Rajasthani or Marwari: dense, detailed patterns covering the hands and feet.
- Arabic: bold flowing vines with open space, quicker to apply.
- Indo-Arabic: a mix of both.
- Figurative or portrait: doli, baraat or the couple's faces drawn into the design.
- Minimal: fine, modern patterns for brides who prefer a lighter look.
Save designs you like and show them to the artists you call.
Check real work
Ask for photos of real brides' hands, taken in daylight a day after application, not only fresh designs. Look at the neatness of the lines, the symmetry and how dark the final colour is.
Ask about the mehendi itself
Good artists make fresh cones from natural henna. Ask what they put in the paste and avoid "black mehendi" or anything that promises instant dark colour; such products can contain chemicals that harm the skin. If you have sensitive skin, ask for a small patch test a few days before.
Time and team
Bridal mehendi on both hands and feet can take four to six hours or more. Ask how long your chosen design will take, and whether the artist will bring a team for guests' mehendi so the function runs on time.
Book and confirm
Popular artists are booked early in the wedding season. Confirm the date, arrival time, number of guests, travel charges and the total price in writing.
