The Puneri and Kolhapuri phetas are the two best-known styles in Maharashtra. Both are proud, festive and beautiful, but they create quite different looks.

Puneri pheta

  • Shape: compact, neat and structured, sitting close to the head.
  • Tail: a short, tidy shemla, or sometimes none.
  • Feel: refined and classic, associated with Pune's cultural heritage.
  • Suits: formal ceremonies, elders, and grooms who prefer an elegant, understated look.

Kolhapuri pheta

  • Shape: taller and fuller, with more volume.
  • Tail: a long, flowing shemla that moves beautifully in photos and dance.
  • Feel: bold, energetic and royal.
  • Suits: the baraat, the groom's entry and families who love a grand look.

Mixing styles

Many families choose a special style for the groom and close family, and a simpler or ready-to-wear style for the guests. This keeps the look unified while saving time on the day.

Fabric and colour

Both styles can be tied in plain cotton or silk, bandhani, leheriya or with zari borders. Silk and zari look rich in photos; cotton is lighter and more comfortable in warm weather.

Comfort matters

Guests may wear the pheta for several hours. Ask the fetewala to tie it firmly but not tightly, and to keep a few spare phetas for latecomers.

Ask to see examples

A good fetewala can show photos of both styles at real weddings and tie a sample for the groom to try with his outfit.
