Flowers bring colour and fragrance to every wedding function. Choosing flowers that are in season keeps them fresh, beautiful and affordable.
Flowers available most of the year
- Marigold (zendu): the heart of Indian wedding decoration, in yellow and orange, long-lasting and affordable.
- Roses: in many colours, for garlands, stage work and the varmala.
- Chrysanthemum (shevanti): white and yellow, great for garlands and backdrops.
- Rajnigandha (tuberose): tall white stems with a lovely fragrance.
- Jasmine (mogra): for the bride's hair and fragrant hangings; it is most abundant in the warmer months.
Winter weddings
Winter is the main wedding season, and the widest range of flowers is available. Gerberas, carnations, lilies and orchids are good for modern stage designs. Prices rise on popular muhurat dates, so book your florist early.
Summer weddings
Choose hardy flowers that handle heat: marigold, chrysanthemum and orchids. Mogra is in plenty and smells wonderful at evening functions. Keep flowers out of direct sun and ask for setup closer to the function time.
Monsoon weddings
Rain and humidity make delicate flowers wilt and petals spot. Use more marigold and sturdy blooms, keep arrangements under cover, and mix fresh flowers with fabric or greenery.
Ask your florist
- Which flowers will be freshest on my date?
- How early will you set up, and how will you keep flowers fresh?
- Can you match the flowers to my outfit or decor colours?
