Decoration turns a hall or a lawn into your wedding. It is also one of the easiest places for costs to grow, so a clear plan before you book helps a lot.
Collect ideas first
Make a small mood board on your phone with photos of stages, mandaps, entrances and table settings you like. Note the colours you love and the ones you want to avoid. Also note which functions need decoration: haldi, mehendi, sangeet, wedding and reception all have different moods.
Check that the decorator suits your venue
A decorator who usually works in banquets may not have the equipment for a large open lawn, and the other way round. Ask for photos of their work at your venue or a similar one, and whether they have worked with your venue's rules about timing, fire safety and setup.
Look at real setups, not just designs
Computer-made 3D designs always look perfect. Ask to see photos and videos from real weddings, ideally taken at night when the lighting is on. If possible, visit a function they are decorating.
Understand the quote
- What is included for each function: stage, mandap, entrance, pathway, seating, table centrepieces, lighting?
- Are flowers fresh or artificial, and which flowers?
- Who provides the generator and electrician?
- Are setup, dismantling and transport included?
- How long before the function will the setup be ready?
Agree on changes and payments
Decide the final design at least two weeks before the wedding. Ask what changes are possible later and how they are charged. Agree a payment schedule and note everything in writing, with photos or sketches of the final design attached.
